Chaos on Apakun Bridge: Overspeeding CNG Truck Slams Into Car, Injures Two Pedestrians in Lagos
Two pedestrians and a motorist were injured on Sunday after an overspeeding Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck crashed into a private car at the Apakun Bridge inward Oshodi, triggering panic and traffic chaos in the busy Lagos corridor.
The Lagos State Government confirmed the incident in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters, describing the crash as a serious threat to lives, property and critical infrastructure in the Oshodi axis.
How the Crash Happened
According to preliminary traffic and security assessments, the articulated truck, with registration number EKY 120 YK, was allegedly driven at a dangerously excessive speed, in violation of established traffic safety regulations.
The truck reportedly rammed into a moving silver Toyota Corolla, registration number EKY 289 HM, at the crest of the Apakun Bridge — a strategic and highly sensitive section of the road network.
The impact of the collision sent shockwaves across the area, resulting in severe traffic disruption and creating an immediate safety risk, particularly due to the truck’s highly combustible CNG cargo.
Pedestrians Hit, Driver Seriously Injured
In the aftermath of the crash, two unsuspecting pedestrians were struck during the chain reaction, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained serious injuries.
Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were swiftly deployed to the scene and carried out emergency rescue operations.
Despite the hazardous conditions posed by the gas-laden truck, LASTMA operatives successfully extricated the injured victims from the wreckage.
The injured pedestrians and the severely wounded driver were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving intensive medical care, according to official sources.
Emergency Response and Security
To prevent secondary incidents and maintain order, officers from the Ajao Estate Police Division provided security reinforcement at the scene, controlling the crowd and ensuring smooth rescue operations.
As a precaution against possible fire or explosion, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were also deployed and placed on high alert.
Lagos Govt Reacts
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, condemned the growing number of accidents linked to reckless overspeeding, especially among operators of trucks, tankers and articulated vehicles.
Giwa described such behaviour as dangerously negligent and unacceptable, warning that the Lagos State Government would enforce traffic laws without compromise.
He issued a stern warning to all truck and tanker operators to strictly obey speed limits, stressing that the government would not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against violators.
While reaffirming the state’s commitment to road safety, Giwa offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured victims and assured residents of continued efforts to protect all road users, particularly pedestrians.
LASTMA’s Warning
LASTMA also renewed its call for collective responsibility on Lagos roads, urging motorists to drive with caution, obey speed limits and adhere strictly to traffic regulations in the interest of public safety.
