Lagos Spends N135M on 20 Chairs and Tables, Plans Another N40M — While Citizens are in Starvation
The Lagos State Office of Public Private Partnership (PPP) has come under scrutiny after spending N135 million on the purchase of just 20 office chairs and tables between January and September 2025. Documents from the approved 2026 Lagos State budget reveal the agency plans to spend an additional N40.5 million on similar items next year.
The development has intensified public concerns over the allocation of Lagos State funds, especially as citizens continue to demand more investment in basic infrastructure and community projects.
Budget records show that lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly plan to spend a total of N55.4 billion on constructing permanent residential quarters for members and beautifying the Assembly complex. Of this, N35.4 billion is set aside for construction, architectural designs, soil tests, and consultancy services, while N20 billion is earmarked for landscaping, fencing, drainage, and general beautification.
Meanwhile, only N16 billion is allocated for “community-based capital infrastructural interventions” — highlighting a stark contrast between lawmakers’ welfare and public needs.
Past budget performance reports indicate billion-naira expenditures on backup generators and property acquisitions for lawmakers. In 2025 alone, the House spent N4.5 billion on forty 50KVA backup generators and N3.6 billion on acquiring properties in Abuja and Lagos.
Critics argue that such spending underscores misplaced priorities, with funds directed toward lawmakers’ comforts while public infrastructure, flood control, and community services lag behind.
With the 2026 budget already projecting further spending on chairs, tables, and lawmakers’ quarters, Lagos residents are left questioning the state’s commitment to citizen-focused development.
