Market Trip Turns Tragedy: Bandits Kill Five, Abduct Others in Fresh Zamfara Ambush
Fresh violence has rocked Zamfara State after armed bandits ambushed residents of Kyaram community returning from Maga Market in Bukkuyyum Local Government Area, killing at least five people and leaving several others missing.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday evening along a rural route linking Maga Market to Kyaram village, threw the area into panic as survivors fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Security sources confirmed that the assailants, reportedly led by a notorious bandit kingpin known as Yellow Janbross, struck swiftly, opening fire on unsuspecting villagers. While five deaths have been officially confirmed, authorities say several residents are still unaccounted for.
A security alert issued by Bakatsine on Thursday corroborated the casualty figures and disclosed that search-and-rescue operations were ongoing to locate missing persons.
The latest ambush comes amid rising insecurity in Zamfara. Earlier reports indicated that at least 20 people were abducted in Dausayi village, while last week, five security personnel, including an inspector attached to Operation Fansan Yamma, were killed in a separate bandit attack in the state.
Police authorities said the Divisional Police Officer of Dansadau Division, working with joint security forces, has been deployed to the affected area to stabilise the situation and pursue the attackers.
The renewed bloodshed has deepened fears among rural communities in Zamfara, where residents say daily activities such as going to the market have become life-threatening amid persistent bandit attacks.
