Onitsha Traders Bounce Back: Army Vows Security as Market Reopens Defying IPOB Sit-At-Home

The Nigerian Army’s 82 Division has reassured traders in Onitsha Main Market and other South-East commercial hubs of full protection, following the market’s reopening after a brief closure linked to IPOB’s sit-at-home orders.

In a statement on Tuesday, Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, said security forces remain fully deployed and continue intelligence-driven operations to dismantle the remnants of IPOB and its militant wing, ESN.

“The courageous traders of Onitsha Main Market have shown resilience by reopening their shops after years of succumbing to threats,” Ayeni said. “This bold step is a collective stand for peace, security, and economic progress in Anambra State and the South-East region.”

He urged residents to pursue lawful activities without fear, reject intimidation, and embrace courage, while warning criminal elements that “unrepentant offenders will face the full weight of the law.”

The statement also highlighted collaboration between the Army, civil authorities, and traditional institutions, ensuring a coordinated approach to maintain lasting peace and security.

Major-General Oluremi Fadairo, General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander, Joint Task Force South-East (Operation UDO KA), commended the Anambra State Government for its political will and support, which he said had strengthened security efforts and created a safe environment for commerce to thrive.

Governor Charles Soludo had ordered the market’s temporary closure about a week ago after noticing traders had complied with IPOB’s illegal directive. Shops reopened on Monday as traders collectively defied the separatist group’s threats, signaling a renewed commitment to economic activity and resilience in the South-East.

The 82 Division reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding life, property, and the sovereignty of Nigeria, urging the public to provide credible intelligence to assist in defeating terrorism in the region.
