The United States has strongly condemned the deadly attack in Kwara State that left more than 160 people dead, describing the violence as “senseless and brutal” as fears grow that the casualty figure could rise further.

In a statement released on Friday, the U.S. government expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims, noting that many residents are still unaccounted for following the massacre.

“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara State in Nigeria, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many still unaccounted for,” the statement said. “We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence.”

Washington also welcomed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s swift response to the tragedy, including his order for the deployment of security forces to protect vulnerable communities in the affected area.

The U.S. further commended the President’s directive to federal and state authorities to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the impacted villages and ensure that those responsible for the killings are tracked down and prosecuted.

“We welcome President Tinubu’s order to deploy security forces to protect villages in the area and his directive to federal and state officials to provide aid to the community and bring the perpetrators of this atrocity to justice,” the statement added.
