Labour Party Crisis Deepens: Julius Abure-Led Faction Threatens to Expel Hon. Afam Ogene Over Alleged Misconduct and Poor Performance
The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) appears far from over as the Julius Abure-led faction has publicly called out one of its lawmakers, Hon. Afam Ogene, over what it describes as a pattern of misconduct, poor performance, and actions deemed detrimental to the unity and stability of the party.
In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, did not mince words. He announced the suspension of Hon. Ogene from the party and warned that if his conduct continues, the party will not hesitate to expel him and begin a recall process from his constituency.
“He has been suspended from the party for his incapability to lead the party caucus in NASS (National Assembly),” Ifoh said.
This political standoff between the Labour Party leadership and Hon. Ogene, a member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, reflects a deeper internal battle within the party’s structure. The fallout appears to be rooted in power struggles, competing loyalties, and disputes over the direction of the party post-2023 general elections.
Labour Party Accuses Ogene of Undermining Party Cohesion
According to the statement signed by Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party believes that Hon. Ogene has not only failed in his legislative duties but has also become a disruptive force within the party. The leadership accuses him of using his position in the National Assembly to work against the interests of the party and destabilize its internal harmony.
“He has been found unfit to represent the Labour Party in the National Assembly,” Ifoh said. “He has become a tool for internal destabilization.”
These comments reflect the growing dissatisfaction within the party’s leadership over Ogene’s perceived disloyalty and confrontational posture, especially following recent legal victories that affirmed Julius Abure’s position as the legitimate national chairman of the Labour Party.
Alleged Possession of Classified Documents
In what is perhaps the most serious accusation leveled against Hon. Ogene, the Labour Party alleges that the lawmaker is in possession of a classified document that allegedly originated from the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). The document’s contents were not disclosed, but its mere possession by a sitting lawmaker has raised security concerns.
“A classified document, which should be with the I-GP or the Minister of Justice cannot be in Ogene’s possession,” Ifoh stressed. “He is expected to contribute in making laws in the National Assembly. How come he is now privy to classified documents from the IGP and AGF’s office?”
This development has prompted calls from the party leadership for security agencies to launch a full investigation into the circumstances under which Ogene obtained such a document. There are fears that the document is being used for political blackmail or to manipulate internal party dynamics.
Accusations of Cyberbullying and Political Attack
In addition to the issue of classified documents, the Labour Party also accused Hon. Ogene of engaging in cyberbullying and political attacks targeted at top government officials and party leaders. According to Ifoh, Ogene has been leveraging this sensitive material to mount a smear campaign against the Attorney-General of the Federation, the police, and Labour Party executives.
“He attempted to cyber-bully the Attorney-General, the police, and the leadership of the party in what is clearly a political matter,” the Labour Party spokesperson said
