Oyo State Approves N4.5 Billion Relief Fund for Bodija Explosion Victims — Full Breakdown of the Government’s Plan
In a major move aimed at providing justice, healing, and relief, the Oyo State Government has officially approved a whopping N4.5 billion as financial support for the victims and survivors of the tragic Bodija explosion, which shocked residents of Ibadan on January 16, 2024.
This crucial decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, May 14, inside the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office.
What Led to This Decision?
The explosion, which took place in Bodija, a well-known area in Ibadan, left many residents dead, injured, and displaced. Properties were destroyed, lives were changed, and the incident left a permanent scar on the affected community.
Since the tragedy occurred, the state government has been actively involved in relief efforts. Now, with this new approval, the government is significantly stepping up its support for those impacted.
A Breakdown of the Relief Plan
While addressing the press, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, explained that this N4.5 billion is in addition to more than N200 million the state had already spent immediately after the disaster. That earlier money went into emergency accommodations, feeding for displaced persons, hospital treatment for the injured, and securing the affected areas.
In his words, “This N4.5 billion is a continuation of our commitment to support and rebuild the lives of those who suffered as a result of the unfortunate incident at Bodija. It is in addition to the over N200 million that was previously spent on accommodation, feeding, hospital care, and security.”
Revoking Land Titles for Public Good
Another big part of the decision made by the council was the approval to revoke the titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, which was the epicentre of the explosion. This recommendation came from a 10-man committee that was earlier set up to investigate and advise the government on the best course of action.
Prince Dotun Oyelade explained this further, saying: “The council also ratified the recommendation of a 10-man committee to revoke the title of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue—the epicentre of the explosion.”
The land, he added, would no longer serve private purposes. Instead, the state government plans to build a monument at the site, in memory of those who lost their lives and to symbolise hope and renewal for the survivors.
“The state will construct a monument on the revoked land in honour of the victims,” he said.
Why This Matters
Oyelade stressed that the government's actions were not just symbolic or financial—they were aimed at providing closure and healing to the families and communities directly affected.
“The decision,” he said, “was taken in the public interest and as part of efforts to bring closure to affected communities.”
By revoking the titles of properties involved in or connected to the explosion, and replacing them with a monument, the state government hopes to not only honour the victims but also send a clear message that the safety and well-being of its citizens come first.
Final Thoughts
This approval of N4.5 billion is a powerful statement from the Oyo State Government. It shows a willingness to take responsibility, act swiftly, and address both the emotional and physical damage caused by the Bodija explosion.
As residents continue to heal and rebuild, this financial support and the planned monument are steps in the right direction.
