SHOCKING! 16-Year-Old SS2 Girl Fakes Her Own Kidnap, Demands N2 Million From Family in Ebonyi

In a dramatic and truly unbelievable incident that has left many Nigerians in shock, a 16-year-old secondary school girl from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, reportedly faked her own kidnapping and demanded a ransom of N2 million from her own family.

The young girl, who is an SS2 student at a private secondary school located on Watchman Street in the heart of Abakaliki, was said to have conspired with a family friend to carry out the entire hoax. The case, which has now caught the attention of both the public and the police, was officially disclosed by the spokesperson of the Ebonyi State Police Command, Joshua Ukandu, during a press briefing on Monday, May 12, 2025.

According to the police, the teenager is a native of Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. She was due to resume school for the third term on Saturday but chose instead to stage a fake abduction for financial gain.

How It All Started

In her statement to the police, the girl explained that she had left home under the guise of going to the market to buy ‘Okirika’ (second-hand clothes), which are popular in many parts of Nigeria. But she later claimed that while at the market, someone tapped her from behind. That, according to her, was the last thing she remembered before allegedly losing consciousness.

She told the authorities that she mysteriously woke up the next day at Ishieke Junction, which is located in Ebonyi Local Government Area. Interestingly, this same story did not sit well with investigators, and as the investigation continued, more shocking truths began to emerge.

The girl added that she often has dreams where she is kidnapped, and said her mother regularly prays against such incidents happening in real life. This, she claimed, added to the believability of her fake kidnapping story.

Rather than return home after regaining ‘consciousness’, the girl instead went straight to the house of a family friend — a man who, according to police, had no idea she was declared missing or that she was even pretending to be kidnapped.

The Fake Kidnap Message and Ransom Demand

From the man’s house, the teenage girl cleverly used his phone to contact her elder brother. In the message she sent, she claimed she had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom of N2 million from the family if they wanted to see her alive.

Her brother, who was shocked and confused, quickly asked to speak with the so-called kidnappers and requested to know their location. However, instead of responding, the girl refused to give any details and blocked his number.

Later on, she unblocked his number and sent him a bank account number — which police later discovered belonged to the family friend who was unknowingly hosting her. She had hoped her family would panic and transfer the money immediately.

How The Plan Failed

Unfortunately for the girl, her plan quickly began to fall apart. The phone she used to send the ransom demand was tracked by police investigators. Acting swiftly, officers from the Ebonyi State Police Command raided the house of the unsuspecting family friend and arrested everyone found at the location.

Speaking on the matter, the police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, said:

“The command has launched a full investigation into the incident.”

He also revealed that although the girl has now been reunited with her family, the police are still treating the matter very seriously — especially because of her age.

The Bigger Picture

This incident has sparked a lot of conversations online and within the Ebonyi community. Many people are asking what could drive a young girl to fake something as serious and traumatic as a kidnapping, and others are wondering whether she acted alone or was influenced by someone else.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the police have assured the public that all those found guilty will face the law. For now, the teenager is back with her family, but the case is far from over.
