Shocking: Ibadan Man Remanded for Allegedly Raping Three Sisters and Another Victim Over 8-Year Period

In a deeply disturbing case that has left many in shock, a 34-year-old man, Femi James, has been ordered to be remanded in a correctional facility by an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan. The court gave this order on Thursday following allegations that James had raped three sisters and one other female victim over a span of eight years.

Femi James, whose residential address was not disclosed in court, is facing a charge of rape, a serious criminal offense under Nigerian law.

The Magistrate presiding over the case, Mrs. Adebola Adeola, made it clear that the court lacked the jurisdiction to take the defendant’s plea at this stage of the proceedings. This means that the court does not have the legal power to hear or decide on the case until it is reviewed by a higher authority.

Due to the nature and gravity of the allegations, Magistrate Adeola ordered that the police should return the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). The DPP will now be responsible for reviewing the evidence and providing legal advice on how the case should proceed—possibly transferring it to a High Court where such serious charges can be properly tried.

She then adjourned the case until June 19, 2025, for further mention, meaning the court will reconvene on that date to receive updates or further directives regarding the case.

According to the prosecuting officer, Sgt. Kehinde Olarotimi, the shocking crimes were allegedly committed between 2017 and 2025—spanning nearly a decade. The offences reportedly occurred in the Akobo area of Ibadan, a fairly residential and well-known community in the city.

The prosecutor informed the court that Femi James unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the victims—three sisters from the same family and one additional person—without their consent. In simpler terms, he is accused of repeatedly engaging in sexual acts with them against their will, which constitutes rape under Nigerian law.

Sgt. Olarotimi emphasized that the alleged actions of the defendant violated Section 358 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000, which specifically deals with the crime of rape and prescribes severe penalties for offenders.

The case has generated strong reactions both online and within the Ibadan community, with many calling for justice for the victims and a thorough investigation into how such abuse allegedly continued for so long without detection.

As the legal process continues, the public now awaits the findings and legal advice from the DPP, which will determine the next steps—whether the case will move to a higher court for full trial or whether additional charges may be brought forward.
