Why Simon Ekpa Hasn’t Been Extradited to Nigeria – FG Explains

The Federal Government has explained why Biafran political activist Simon Ekpa has not yet been extradited from Finland to Nigeria, despite his arrest and detention there.

On Thursday, May 8, the government stated that Ekpa will not be brought back to Nigeria until he completes his ongoing legal case in Finland.

This update was given by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. He revealed that Simon Ekpa committed crimes that affect both Nigeria and Finland, and must therefore face trial in Finland first.

Speaking during an event in Abuja, Fagbemi said:

“On the case of Simon Ekpa, I want to let you know that he committed cross-border offences. He violated laws in both Finland and Nigeria.

“He was arrested there and the Finnish authorities want to deal with the situation first and afterwards, release him to us.

“So, we will allow them to finish with the engagement there and then hand him over to us.”

In summary, the Nigerian government is waiting for Finnish authorities to complete their legal process before Ekpa can be extradited to face charges back home.
