Church Kidnap Survivors Freed in Kaduna – Mystery Surrounds Rescue Operation

Worshippers abducted from churches in Kurmin Wali town, Kaduna State, on January 18, 2026, have reportedly been released, though the circumstances surrounding their freedom remain unclear.

A community leader, speaking on condition of anonymity to DailyTrust, described unusual activity in the early hours of Thursday:

“Between about 11 p.m. and midnight, large vehicles were seen entering the forest around Maro town. By 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., the abducted people were brought out. We do not know who rescued them or whether all of them were freed, but their release has been confirmed.”

The leader also noted uncertainty about whether any ransom was paid or if the 17 motorcycles reportedly demanded by the kidnappers were handed over.

Originally, 177 worshippers were taken during the attack on the Kurmin Wali churches. Fortunately, 80 victims, including mostly children, managed to escape to forest settlements during the ordeal.

Security and local authorities have yet to clarify who orchestrated the release or provide further details about the rescue operation. The incident continues to raise questions about the safety of worshippers and communities in the Kufana axis of Kajuru Local Government Area.
