BREAKING: VeryDarkMan Released from EFCC Custody After Five Days (VIDEO)
Nigerian social media activist and influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after spending five days in detention.
VDM was arrested on Friday, May 2, 2025, at a Guaranty Trust Bank branch in Abuja, where he had accompanied his mother to address alleged unauthorized withdrawals from her account. The EFCC later confirmed that his arrest was linked to multiple petitions accusing him of financial misconduct.
His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the release on Wednesday evening, stating that VDM was released on administrative bail. Adeyanju had previously criticized the EFCC's handling of the bail process, describing it as "social media bail" due to delays in providing formal documentation.
The arrest and detention of VDM sparked widespread reactions on social media, with several public figures, including former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, as well as musician Davido, calling for his immediate release.
In a video shared after his release, VDM expressed disbelief over the allegations, questioning how someone in his financial position could be accused of money laundering. He stated, "How can the EFCC accuse someone who isn’t wealthy of money laundering? I’ve done a lot of charity work, and they’re wondering where I get the money from, not knowing I’m running it on debt."
The EFCC has indicated that investigations are ongoing and that charges may follow. The commission emphasized its commitment to due process and urged the public to allow it to carry out its duties without interference.
VDM's release has been met with jubilation among his supporters, who view him as a vocal advocate for accountability and transparency in Nigeria. His case continues to draw attention to issues surrounding freedom of expression and the role of social media activism in the country.
