Gunmen Abduct UNIUYO Professor, Others on Owerri-Aba Highway – Driver K!lled
Tragedy struck on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as gunmen attacked travellers along the Owerri-Aba Highway in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. Among those kidnapped is Professor Herbert Batta, the Head of the Department of Media and Information Technology at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO).
According to reports, the attack happened around 6:25 p.m. The armed men ambushed vehicles on the busy road, opening fire and causing chaos. A driver of a Toyota Hilux, with plate number BWR 692 GJ (registered in the Federal Capital Territory), was shot and k!lled during the incident.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed that the attackers kidnapped several passengers during the ambush. “As of now, the identities of the other abducted passengers remain unknown. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the assailants and secure the release of the victims,” a source told him.
In response to the attack, a combined security team made up of the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes has been deployed to the area. They are currently carrying out intensive search operations to track down the kidnappers and rescue the victims.
