Jonathan Warns Against One-Party Rule in Nigeria: “It Could Lead to Anarchy”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that trying to force a one-party system on Nigeria could choke the country’s democracy and cause serious unrest.

Speaking in Abuja at a memorial lecture in honour of the late Chief Edwin Clark on Wednesday, May 7, Jonathan didn’t mince words. He said, “Any attempt to impose a one-party system in Nigeria will suffocate the nation’s political space and potentially lead to confusion and anarchy.”

Jonathan pointed out that although Tanzania under Julius Nyerere successfully ran a one-party system, it was only possible because it came from a deliberate and inclusive process—not through backdoor politics or manipulation. He made it clear that, “If Nigeria were to adopt such a system, it must be done procedurally and not through coercion or political scheming.”

This warning comes at a time when many politicians from opposition parties like the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP are defecting to the ruling APC, raising concerns about the future of political balance in the country.

Jonathan also used the occasion to pay tribute to Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a true father figure. He praised the late South-South leader’s sharp memory, fearless spirit, and unwavering commitment to what he believed in. Jonathan said, “His kind cannot be replaced.”
