“May Nigeria Never Happen to You” — Heartbroken Nigerian Mother Recounts How Her 2-Month-Old Baby Died at Kano Hospital Due to Lack of Doctors
In a deeply painful and heartbreaking post that has stirred emotions across social media, a Nigerian woman named Abdulazeez Hope Maryam has shared the tragic story of how she lost her 2-month-old daughter in a hospital in Kano State, due to the complete absence of doctors during a medical emergency.
Maryam poured out her grief in a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, where she explained in heartbreaking detail how the negligence of the healthcare system cost her the life of her precious baby girl.
According to her, she rushed her daughter, who was experiencing a serious medical emergency, to the emergency department of Nassarawa Hospital in Kano State. However, despite the urgency of the situation, there were no doctors on duty to attend to them.
She waited for over two agonizing hours, hoping that a doctor would eventually show up to help save her baby's life. Sadly, that never happened.By the time she realized that no help was coming and decided to take her baby elsewhere, it was already too late.
"When people say may Nigeria never happen to you I never really understood what they meant until I rushed my daughter to Nassarawa Hospital Kano state in the emergency department for more than two hours no doctor to attend to us and before I could leave there to another hospital I lost my precious daughter. Ahhhhh," she wrote, expressing her devastation.
Maryam’s words capture the emotional weight of a mother’s anguish — a pain that no parent should ever have to endure. Her post not only mourns the loss of her child, but also sheds light on the harsh realities of Nigeria's struggling healthcare system, where access to timely and adequate medical care is still a luxury for many.
In a follow-up part of her post, the grieving mother wrote a heartbreaking tribute to her little girl, Hibatullah, whose life was cut tragically short.
The pain in her voice is one that many Nigerians unfortunately recognize — a pain born not just from personal loss, but from a system that continues to fail its people in their most vulnerable moments.“My tiny angel, though your time with me was short, your impact on my life will be felt forever. In just two months, you stole my heart with your sweet smiles and gentle coos. Your brief life touched my soul in ways I will cherish always. Rest peacefully, little one, and shine brightly among the stars. I love you more than words can say. HIBATULLAH.”
Maryam’s story is not just one of personal grief, but a call to action for leaders, policymakers, and all Nigerians to reflect on the urgent need for healthcare reform. Her experience is a brutal reminder that the cost of inaction is measured in lives — innocent lives like that of baby Hibatullah.
At NaijaRush, we join others in mourning with Maryam and sending strength to her during this unimaginably difficult time. No parent should ever have to go through what she did. And no Nigerian should ever have to say: "May Nigeria never happen to you" — and truly mean it from a place of pain.
