Tragedy on Eko Bridge: Two Dispatch Riders Crushed by Falling Container After Truck Crash

Two dispatch riders sadly lost their lives on Sunday, May 11, after a 20-foot container fell on them during a horrific accident on Eko Bridge, inward Alaka, Lagos.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident happened when two fully loaded Mack trucks collided. The spokesperson for LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, explained that early investigations show one of the truck drivers was likely speeding and may have dozed off behind the wheel.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of one of the articulated trucks, reportedly driving at an excessive speed while allegedly dozing off, lost control of the vehicle,” Taofiq said.

He added that the out-of-control truck rammed into another moving truck in front of it, causing a powerful crash.

“The truck then careened into another moving truck ahead of it, triggering a violent impact."

The force of the crash caused a 20-foot container to fall off one of the trucks. Tragically, the container landed directly on two dispatch riders who were passing by at that moment.

“This collision led to the dislodgement of a 20-foot container from one of the trucks, which subsequently crushed two unsuspecting dispatch riders who were navigating the route at the time."

Both dispatch riders, whose bikes had registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM, were confirmed dead at the scene.

“Both victims were confirmed d3ad at the scene."

LASTMA officers who were monitoring traffic nearby rushed to the scene. They were able to rescue one truck driver who was seriously injured. He was taken to a nearby hospital in a Lagos State Government ambulance for urgent treatment.

Sadly, both truck drivers involved in the accident fled the scene. LASTMA says efforts are ongoing to track them down.

To avoid more accidents, the affected part of Eko Bridge has been cordoned off, and traffic is now being redirected through Coastain Roundabout.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Bakare-Oki, sent his condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as deeply saddening.

He also used the opportunity to urge truck drivers and all road users to be extra cautious and responsible on the road.

“This is a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible driving, especially for articulated vehicle operators. We urge all drivers to stay alert and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before any journey,” he said.
