Brace Yourselves, Lagos Drivers: Apongbon Bridge Closed for Six Weeks, Massive Diversions Ahead
Lagos — The Lagos State Government has announced a six-week traffic diversion to allow urgent repair works on the Apongbon Bridge and its service lanes, set to start Thursday, February 5, 2026, and run until March 19.
According to Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Federal Ministry of Works will fix damaged asphalt sections on the ramp linking Inner Marina to Apongbon Bridge, as well as portions of the bridge’s inbound and outbound carriageways.
To ensure safety and minimise gridlock, affected road sections will be temporarily closed, with alternative routes clearly mapped for motorists:
- Inbound traffic from Inner Marina will detour through the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout to Adeniji Adele Road, continuing via Ebute Ero to reconnect with the Apongbon-Eko bridge ramp.
- From Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Third Mainland Bridge, and Victoria Island, motorists can continue over Apongbon Bridge to Eko Bridge, except during inbound main carriageway repairs, when they will be rerouted via Inner Marina and the service lane.
- Outbound traffic from Eko Bridge to Inner Marina will divert through Ebute Ero Ramp and Adeniji Adele Road during outbound lane repairs.
- Motorists heading to Outer Marina, CMS, Victoria Island, or Third Mainland Bridge will mostly maintain movement, except for occasional diversions via Ebute Ero Ramp, Leventis, and Outer Marina/CMS.
The repairs follow damage caused by a major fire in March 2022, which severely affected sections of Apongbon and Eko bridges. The fire led to prolonged closures, structural rehabilitation, and the demolition of illegal structures beneath the bridge. After 15 months of restoration, the bridge reopened in July 2023, though minor works have continued intermittently.
Mr. Osiyemi urged Lagos drivers to exercise patience and follow traffic management directives, reassuring that personnel will be deployed to keep congestion to a minimum during the repair period.
