Suspected Cultists K!ll Fresh Graduate of Niger Delta University (NDU) in Bayelsa State
In a shocking and heartbreaking incident, suspected cultists have taken the life of another fresh graduate from the prestigious Niger Delta University (NDU). The victim, identified as Abinna Precious Briggs, was tragically shot dead in Amassoma, the community that hosts the university, on the night of Monday, May 13.
Abinna had recently completed his final examinations at NDU and was eagerly awaiting the defence of his project before officially graduating. Unfortunately, his promising future was cut short by senseless violence. According to reports, he was targeted by a rival cult group, a clear indication that the ongoing violence between rival cult factions has claimed yet another innocent life.
A source within the community revealed the grim details of the incident to Daily Trust, stating that after Abinna was shot, he was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. However, due to procedural restrictions concerning the treatment of gunshot wounds, the hospital refused to provide him with immediate care. Tragically, Abinna died from the massive blood loss he suffered from the gunshot wound, leaving his family, friends, and the entire community in mourning.
The horrifying event is not an isolated one. In the past two weeks alone, there has been a spate of killings, with at least ten individuals losing their lives in the continuing clashes between rival cult groups in the region. These acts of violence have not only shattered the peace but have also sent shockwaves through the university community and beyond.
Just a few days ago, on May 9, two other graduates from NDU, who were waiting for their call-up for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), met a similar tragic fate. Like Abinna, they too were murdered in cold blood, reinforcing the frightening and growing trend of cult-related violence in the area. The situation continues to raise alarm, particularly among students, families, and residents who are left grappling with a sense of fear and helplessness.
In response to this latest killing, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Muhammad, confirmed the death of Abinna and assured the public that investigations are currently underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act. He emphasized that the police are working tirelessly to bring justice to the victim’s family and ensure the safety of the community.
This tragic event serves as yet another painful reminder of the dangers posed by cult-related violence in many Nigerian universities. As the authorities continue to investigate and work toward curbing these senseless killings, there is an urgent need for stronger measures to address the root causes of cultism and ensure that future graduates like Abinna are not robbed of their lives or potential in such a violent manner.
At NaijaRush, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Abinna Precious Briggs. We hope for justice to be served, and for those responsible for these senseless killings to be held accountable for their actions. The time for action is now, and we must all work together to put an end to the scourge of cultism and violence that continues to plague our communities and educational institutions.
