Rivers State High Court Remands Four Suspects in Connection to Kidnapping and Murder of Retired Headteacher

 

A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has ordered the remand of four suspects involved in the kidnapping and murder of a retired headteacher. The individuals—Emmanuel Eke, Ogechi Ogbogu (popularly known as “United”), Charles Anayor (also known as “Biggie”), and Nelson Isaiah—are facing a serious three-count charge, which includes conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder.

The accused individuals are believed to have been part of a criminal plot that dates back to 2012. During that time, they allegedly conspired to abduct and later murder Eugene Ndubuisi Orlu Orlu, a retired headteacher, from the Ubima community located in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The victim, a well-known figure in the area, was kidnapped by the group, who are said to have demanded a ransom of fifteen million naira for his release.

After collecting the ransom, however, the suspects are accused of killing Eugene Orlu, placing his body in a sack, and subsequently burying it in a forest that lies between neighboring communities. The crime shocked the local residents, as the victim’s abduction and murder unfolded in a disturbing manner, involving a gruesome act after the ransom was paid.

When the charges were read in court, the accused individuals all pleaded not guilty, maintaining their innocence in the face of the serious allegations. Despite their pleas, no bail application was filed, and the presiding judge, Justice Augusta Kingsley-Chukwu, made the decision to remand them in the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility. This ruling ensures that the suspects will remain in custody while they await further legal proceedings.

Justice Kingsley-Chukwu has set the next dates for the continuation of the case to May 20th and 27th, 2025. During these sessions, the court will commence an accelerated hearing to ensure the case moves forward swiftly, bringing attention to the severity of the crimes committed and the pursuit of justice for the victim and his family.

This case highlights the continuing challenges faced by communities in Rivers State regarding the dangerous activities of criminal gangs.
